Understanding the Madeirans - research internships

The goal of this project is to gain an understanding of how the people of Madeira perceive their
physical, cultural and economic environments and how in turn these perceptions guide and
influence their social interactions and their consumption patterns of various goods and services.
The project employs a service design approach. Service design is a design framework that asks you
to open your mind and generate a vision in seeing context in a different light as well as a critical
standpoint on the subject. This approach will allow you to investigate behaviors, be aware of how
things co-related, interpret needs and transform them into potential services.

For this project you will participate in: the conduction of ethnographic observations and contextual
inquiries; aid in the creation and analysis of cultural probes; review and code images and comments
from Facebook or other social networking websites; and use available demographic, government,
corporate data and develop surveys to compile profiles of Madeira’s population, economy and
transportation, water, electricity and gas infrastructure.

Required skill: An open mind, curiosity and good eye/ear for details, Good basic research skills,
experience with online information retrieval and analysis. Experience in one of the social sciences
and experience with survey construction preferred by not required.
